Michael Kanell, M.D.
Dr. Kanell is a board-certified in both General Adult and Forensic Psychiatry. He completed his residency and fellowship training for both board certifications at the UCLA and Greater Los Angeles VA hospital systems. He also completed specialized training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy from the New Center for Psychoanalysis. In treating patients, he balances evidence-based medication with emotionally aware therapy to help treat a variety of mental health issues including depression, anxiety, anger issues, OCD, ADHD, PTSD, and schizophrenia other common and complex conditions.
His clinical interests include analytic and dynamic psychotherapy and treating phase of life problems, including transitioning from adolescence to adulthood, from single life to partnership and back, from graduated to employed to retired, and from religious to agnostic and back.
He aims to help his patients create true character change using both short and long-term therapy focusing on deep emotional introspection. He believes we are all on a journey to discover and develop inner strength to manage life’s difficulties. His goal is to help you live your own life honestly and build the self-reliance to take control of your future.
Tongtong Zhu, M.S., M.D.
Dr. Tongtong A. Zhu, M.D. is dual board-certified in General Adult and Geriatric Psychiatry. She has experience working with diverse population groups treating a broad range of mental health issues including anxiety, depression, PTSD, mood disorders, as well as ADHD, dementia, and other neurocognitive disorders. She completed her residency at the UCLA/Greater Los Angeles VA psychiatric program, where she developed an interest in dynamic psychotherapy and facilitated clinical research focusing on the treatment of chronic pain in the geriatric population with psychotherapy. She subsequently completed an additional geriatric psychiatry fellowship at UCLA.
Dr. Zhu employees her expertise in pharmacological interventions as well as psychotherapy to deliver a collaborative and targeted treatment approach unique to each patient. She also specializes in intensive short term psychodynamic psychotherapy, where she aims to help each patient make deep, meaningful, and lasting changes in his or her life.
